Blocking a Knit or Crochet Project

Blocking helps a finished knit or crochet project maintain its shape. It is often used with garments, lacy items, and doilies to help open up the stitches and prevent the finished piece from curling in on itself.

To block aproject, use rust-proof pins to pin each piece wrong side up to a padded surface in the measurements desired. Be sure the surface is smooth and the edges are even. Cover the item with a damp cloth and press very lightly with a moderately hot iron; do not allow the weight of the iron to rest on the finished piece. Remove the cloth and let the piece dry thoroughly before removing the pins.
