Product Development Specialist - Needlework

The Product Development Specialist (PDS) partners with the Merchandise Manager to develop needlework products from initial concepts through a commercially packaged, ready-to-sell item. This role manages all phases of product development, ensuring products meet creative, cost, quality, and timeline expectations.

Product Development Specialist - Needlework

Primary Responsibilities

Collaborate with the Merchandise Manager to strategically develop new products and product lines.

Establish and manage product development schedules using the Asana Project Management system.

Assign and manage outside designers, clearly communicating inspiration, target costs, deadlines, and expectations; follow up to ensure timely delivery.

Coordinate design approvals with Merchandise Manager, including design concept, cost, and designer compensation.

Process design contracts and submit invoices for approval; ensure royalty-driven designs are accurately reflected in selling SKUs.

Oversee model development as required, coordinating with freelance model makers or producing models in-house; ensure models, charts, and instructions are completed and approved.

Develop accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and review kit components to ensure manufacturing efficiency and cost targets are met.

Present final models and complete documentation—including BOMs, instructions, charts, labels, fact sheets, and manufacturing specifications—to Merchandise Manager; ensure accuracy across all materials.

Ensure all products comply with legal, labeling, and copyright requirements.

Maintain complete and organized product development records in accordance with company standards.

Partner with the supply chain team to meet manufacturing timelines.

Coordinate product photography.

Collaborate cross-functionally to share best practices, generate ideas, and drive continuous improvement.

Perform additional duties as needed to support company objectives.

Knowledge and Skills

Strong knowledge of counted cross-stitch, embroidery, and other needlework crafts.

Ability to proof instructions and diagrams with a high level of accuracy.

Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Team-oriented with a service mindset and customer-first approach.

Results-driven with a sense of urgency and commitment to continuous improvement.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of experience in merchandising, buying, marketing, or equivalent needlework-related experience.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Typing speed of 50 WPM or higher.

Ability to handle proprietary information with strict confidentiality.
